Dr. Alexander Chance

Head of Policy & Research, Transparency International (TI) Ireland

Dr. Alexander Chance specialises in strategic approaches to transnational organised crime, illicit finance and corruption, including in post-conflict settings. As Head of Policy and Research at Transparency International (TI) Ireland, Alexander leads programmes on anti-corruption, anti-money laundering and political integrity, and is also co-founder of TI’s global Working Group on Corruption and Organised Crime.

Alongside his TI role, he is a Senior Fellow at the Azure Forum for Contemporary Security Strategy (Ireland’s national security think-tank) and an Associate Fellow at RUSI within the Organised Crime and Policing group. In his early career, Alexander consulted for the UN before coordinating track II mediation processes between political and religious leaders in Israel/Palestine and Nigeria. He then entered law enforcement, serving in the UK National Crime Agency (NCA) and its precursor agencies in operational, strategy and management positions, including five years running cross-border counter-narcotics operations in South America, as well as leading specialist anti-corruption and cyber-crime teams.

Alexander completed his PhD at Trinity College Dublin, where his research examined the relationship between organised crime, governance and peacebuilding in post-war Mozambique. He also holds an MPhil in International Peace Studies from Trinity College Dublin and a BA in Law and Politics from Durham University.
