Dr. Anna Alvazzi del Frate is an independent consultant on crime and violence prevention. She was previously at the Small Arms Survey (SAS), a project of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland, where she was Director of Programmes between 2016 and 2019. Before joining SAS, she spent more than twenty years working for the United Nations, at UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) in Vienna, and previously at UNICRI (United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute), in Italy and in Angola. She also worked as a researcher and lecturer in sociology of law and criminology at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. Her career has focused on applied research for evidence-based policymaking through quantitative and qualitative studies on firearm violence and its prevention, monitoring, and evaluation, with particular attention to gender-related aspects.
Dr. Alvazzi del Frate holds a Doctorate in Criminology from the University of Bologna, Italy. Author of numerous articles and books, she is a member of the Advisory Board of the European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control (HEUNI, Helsinki) and of the EU Group of Experts on the Policy Needs for data on Crime. She is currently the Chair of the Alliance of NGOs on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, based in Vienna.
