Madan Sharma is the Central Information Commissioner of India (Retd) and has served in the Indian Police Service (Retd). He entered the Rajasthan Police in 1976 as a Commandant in the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary, Manipur. From 1977 to 1988 he served as the District Superintendent of Police for a number of districts.

In 1989 he was promoted to Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ajmer Range, Ajmer. In 2000 he was promoted to Inspector General of Police, CID (Crime Branch), Rajasthan, Jaipur and then Additional Director General of Police (Vigilance), Rajasthan in 2004. Mr. Sharma was also a member of the Border Security Force as Inspector General from 2003 to 2004 and Additional Director General from 2004 to 2005. He has also held positions with the Central Bureau of Investigation as a Superintendent of Police (1982 to 1986), Deputy Inspector General of Police (1990-1995), Joint Director (1995-2000), Additional Director (April 2005 to Nov. 2006) and Special Director (Nov.2006 to Sep. 2008).

Mr. Sharma has been the recipient of a number of prestigious awards as well as published on organised crime. He received the Indian Presidents’ Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 1988 and the Indian Presidents’ Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 1995. He published ‘Organised Crime in India : Problems & Perspectives’ which was published in the Journal of United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI) (1997) and headed a Committee constituted by Ministry of Home Affairs and drafted “Approach Paper on Organised Crime in India” (2006). Mr. Sharma is presently engaged in the propagation of RTI culture through lectures/presentations all over the country.
