Sophy Kohler

Senior Editor, Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime

Sophy Kohler is senior editor at the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC). She has worked as a freelance writer and editor since 2007, with publications in the South African Sunday TimesThe TimesBusiness Day and City Press. She is the former Editor at Jonathan Ball Publishers, Cape Town, and since 2008, has worked as an editorial consultant for the GI-TOC, particularly on the ongoing NAS-Obs project ‘Monitoring the Political Economy of Human Smuggling in North Africa and the Sahel’.

Sophy has an MA in Literature and Modernity from the University of Cape Town and a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Southern Denmark. Her research interests are in literature and migration, postcolonial studies, and the oceanic and environmental humanities, with an emphasis on the interrelationship between Africa and Antarctica. Her research has been published in Social Dynamics and in Precarity in Contemporary Literature and Culture, edited by Emily J. Hogg and Peter Simonsen (Bloomsbury Academic, 2021).
