Michael Stuart Kelsey

Commander, Australian Federal Police

Commander Michael (Mick) Kelsey has over 24 years experience in State, Federal and International law enforcement. He joined the Queensland Police Service in 1989, performing uniformed and criminal investigative duties, before joining the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in 1998.
Mr. Kelsey investigated serious and organised crime with the AFP in Sydney before serving as a UN peacekeeper in East Timor in 2000 and member of a peace monitoring team in the Solomon Islands in 2001. In 2002 he was posted to Indonesia where he managed transnational organised crime investigations and coordinated several significant capacity building projects.
He played a key liaison and investigative role following to the terrorist attacks in Bali in 2002, and led the AFP response to the Australian Embassy bombing in 2004. Mr. Kelsey later served as liaison officer to the Attorney General and Minister for Justice in Canberra, before being deployed to the Microsoft Corporation in Seattle to undertake an executive development opportunity in 2008.

He was the Deputy Manager of the AFP Sydney Office until January 2011, managing multiple teams investigating organised crime and terrorism. In January 2011, Mr. Kelsey began his deployment to the Australian Embassy in Washington DC and will return to Australia in early 2014 to assume responsibility for AFP Intelligence Operations. Mr. Kelsey is also a graduate of the Royal Military College, Duntroon and was formerly a commissioned officer in the Australian Army Reserve.
