Gabriela holds a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations and Public International Law from Utrecht University and a Master’s Degree in Crisis and Security Management from Leiden University in the Netherlands. During her Bachelor’s, she spent a semester participating in an academic and internship program at Bard College in New York City.
Prior to joining the Global Initiative, Gabriela did a research internship with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, where she contributed to a study on transnational organized crime and human trafficking in Nigeria and conducted her own research on the gender dimension of familial trafficking of children for sexual exploitation. Her main areas of interest include human trafficking in conflict situations, illicit financial flows and the role of corruption in human smuggling and drug trafficking, among others.
Gabriela is passionate about law enforcement cooperation in criminal matters as she spent six months as an open-source intelligence intern at Europol, where she contributed to the EU Serious and Organised Crime Threat Assessment. She is fluent in English and possess intermediate working proficiency in Spanish and basic knowledge of French and Dutch.
