Carla Álvarez Velasco holds a doctorate in political studies and is a specialist in firearms trafficking and related policies of control, armed violence, and policies aimed at drug trafficking and consumption. She has performed several consultancies for international organizations specialized in arms-related issues and has published several materials on the topic. She is a professor at the Instituto de Altos Estudios Nacionales of Ecuador.
