Klairoong Poonpon is the Expert on Forest and Wildlife Resources Conservation at the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation (DNP). Before this role, she served as the Director of CITES Implementation and Monitoring at DNP. Since starting to work as a forester in 1990, Klairoong started her career experienced in forestry work on forest inventory, nursery and plantation, and forest protection. Her wildlife conservation work commenced in 1998 when she was assigned as Head of Wildlife Protected Area Management, a sub-division of the Thai Government’s Wildlife Conservation Bureau. Klairoong was involved and instrumental in the establishment of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN) in 2005, by additionally working as the Thai Government Liaison Officer in the ASEAN-WEN Program Coordination Unit, and ensuring that the Thai Government’s commitment and contributions as lead country of ASEAN-WEN, and its network operations, were sustained. In addition, she also joined the Interpol Wildlife Crime Working Group Meeting in 2008 as the representative from Thailand, and acted as the Chair of the Working Group from 2012-2013. Dr. Klairoong received her doctorate in Public Administration from Thailand’s National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA). She holds a master’s degree in Forest Resources Administration and bachelor’s in forestry – both from Kasetsart University, Thailand.
