Marika McAdam

International Consultant

Marika McAdam is an independent consultant on human trafficking, migrant smuggling and related issues. She has drafted key publications for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Office on the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and others.

Marika has conducted research globally on the challenges of implementing international law into domestic practice, in regions as diverse as the Horn of Africa, Latin America and the South Caucasus. Her recent publications address shelter practices in ASEAN, human trafficking in conflict, and mainstreaming human rights and gender equality into criminal justice responses to trafficking and smuggling.

Marika also works directly with States and other stakeholders to provide independent advice on harmonizing domestic law and practice with international norms and standards, and participates regularly in UN expert group meetings and roundtables with civil society and other actors.

She has served as international law and policy adviser for the Regional Support Office for the Bali Process on People Smuggling, Trafficking in Persons and Related Transnational Crime and the ASEAN-Australia Counter-Trafficking. She serves on various boards, advisory groups and committees on issues ranging from human trafficking to research ethics. She has published opinion pieces and journal articles on various issues.

Her book on Freedom from Religion and Human Rights Law: Strengthening the Right to Freedom of Religion and Belief for non-religious and atheist rights-holders was published by Routledge in 2018. She has a PhD in international human rights law.
