Koen Ono is a FinTech regulatory specialist and CEO of Pisces Advisory LLC, a Tokyo-based consultancy focused on financial regulation, AML/CFT compliance, and digital asset governance across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. A Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), he advises governments and private sector clients on licensing frameworks, regulatory positioning, and cross-border compliance for virtual asset service providers.

Prior to founding Pisces Advisory, Koen served as a Japanese diplomat at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Posted to Indonesia, he worked as Private Secretary to the Ambassador in Jakarta and as Vice Consul in Medan, North Sumatra, where he was involved in counter-terrorism efforts in the post-9/11 era. This background gave him direct experience in public governance, policy implementation, and international cooperation in security and justice.

He publishes weekly regulatory intelligence reports covering crypto asset and stablecoin regulation across 19 APAC and Middle Eastern jurisdictions and serves as a certified expert commentator on NewsPicks, Japan’s leading business media platform. His research interests include the intersection of financial crime, digital assets, and transnational organized crime, with a focus on how regulatory gaps in emerging digital finance ecosystems can be exploited by illicit actors.
