The illicit trade in cultural property – cultural goods and looted archaeological objects, highly valued on international markets – is one of the greatest threats to heritage in North and West Africa.
Join us for an event that will bring together leading researchers and cultural heritage professionals to discuss new and emerging dynamics in the illegal trade, its impact on cultural heritage and communities in these regions and innovative policy responses.
The discussion will draw on a new ENACT research study – ‘Culture in Ruins’ – which investigates the dynamics of trafficking in Mali, Nigeria, Tunisia and Algeria. Leading experts in the field will also present their own work and perspectives on the issue as it is manifested in North and West Africa. We hope to prompt a debate on how the illegal trade in cultural property is to be understood and national and international-level responses to it.
