The Observatory of Illicit Economies in North Africa and the Sahel is headquartered in Malta and encompasses researchers working across the two regions. Established in 2018, the Observatory focuses on the political economy of transnational organized crime, mapping and identifying the hubs, routes and flows of illicit markets, the key actors, stakeholders, and transnational organized crime groups involved, and the impact which those activities have on governance, social tension, conflict, and stability in North Africa and the Sahel.
