World Order or Disorder? – The nexus between terrorism and organised crime
When: 3rd of April 2017
Where: WMO Building, Kruzel Hall (2nd Floor)
The Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) warmly invite you to join the Geneva launch of the National Defence University’s edited volume of essays looking at transnational threats: trends, enablers and impacts. The book “Beyond Convergence: World without Order” is a sequel to the very successful 2013 volume of “Convergence: Illicit networks and national security”.
This book suggests that the last 10 years have witnessed “the emergence of a highly adaptive and parasitic alternative ecosystem, based on criminal commerce and extreme violence, with little regard for what we commonly conceive of as the public interest or the public good.” What are the consequences of such an emerging criminal ecosystem on national security, state fragility, and overall global system of states?
We had the pleasure of hosting not only one of the editors of the volume but also three authors of chapters around the topic of terrorism and organised crime:
- Michael Miklaucic (editor and moderator)
- Karl Lallerstedt (author of Chapter 12: “The Neglected Mega-Problem: Illicit Trade in ‘Normally Licit’ Goods”)
- Tuesday Reitano (co-author of Chapter 10: “Virtually Illicit: The Use of Social Media in a Hyper-Connected World”)
- Christina Schori Liang (respondent, Geneva Centre for Security Policy)
As usual, we will live tweeted (@GI_TOC) the event, which was also be recorded via Facebook Live from our Facebook page.
The Global Initiative is co-hosting three further launch events of Beyond Borders: World without Order in London (5th of April) together with the IISS, and also in Oslo (tba) and Vienna (tba), where different authors of Beyond Convergence will present their work.
