This is the 10th issue of the GI-TOC’s Western Cape Gang Monitor, an output of our South Africa Organized Crime Observatory.

This series of bulletins tracks developments in Western Cape gang dynamics each quarter, to provide a concise synthesis of relevant trends on information provided by field researchers working in gang-affected communities of the Western Cape. This includes interviews with current and former gang members, civil society and members of the criminal justice system.

IN THIS ISSUE

This issue traces four developments in the Western Cape’s gang landscape over the past quarter:

  • How the impact of the military deployment Operation Prosper has been perceived by communities and gang members.
  • Ways in which gang leaders continue to influence illicit operations while incarcerated, and insights into the prison contraband market.
  • A case study of Malmesbury, examining factors behind why gangs expand to outlying towns.
  • A recent trial concerning the state supply of guns to gangs sees convicted former police colonel Christiaan Prinsloo giving evidence.
