Mech Dara is an award-winning Cambodian journalist who has reported extensively on organized crime and corruption in the country. His work has been crucial in mapping cyber-scam operations and exploitation for forced criminality across Cambodia as well as exposing the umbrella of elite protection that enables the criminal industry to thrive.

Dara was arrested on 30 September 2024 on the border between Koh Kong and Sihanouk province. On 1 October he was charged with incitement to commit a felony related to social media posts he made the month prior. The charges carry a prison sentence of up to two years. He is currently being held in pre-trial detention.

Over the past years Cambodia has consistently reduced the space for journalists to work, including by shutting down independent newspapers which Dara worked for. Dara’s arrest appears to be the latest attempt to silence independent reporting in the country and threaten those who expose wrong-doing.

Around the world local NGOs as well as international media houses have raised concern about Mech Dara’s arrest and called for his immediate release. The GI-TOC adds its voice to these calls.

The GI-TOC urges the Cambodian authorities to provide a fair and transparent trial as per the Cambodian constitution and not to restrict civil society.
