The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime would like to invite you to the launch of The Human Conveyor Belt Broken – assessing the collapse of the human smuggling industry in Libya and the central Sahel.
A few more than 23,000 migrants arrived in Europe after crossing the Central Mediterranean in 2018, a staggering drop from 120,000 in 2017 and 180,000 in the year before that. This tectonic shift started in the middle of 2017 and is the result of fundamental changes that have been taking place in the human smuggling and trafficking industries of Libya and the Sahel over the past two years.
The Human Conveyor Belt Broken assesses and explains this through a political economy analysis of the key changes that took place in Libya, Niger, Chad and Mali during this period.
Speakers:
Mark Micallef, Senior Fellow, Global Initiative
Alexandre Bish, Analyst, Global Initiative
Chair:
Fransje Molenaar, Senior Research Fellow Politics and Crime, Clingendael Institute.
