The financial flows derived from natural resource exploitation, as well as other forms of crime, are critical to ability of actors (both state and non-state) to sustain conflict, and the accompanying violence and insecurity. As such, it is essential the international community identify and adopt interventions which cut off these financial lifelines. Cracking the Connections, looks at the nexus between organized crime, conflict and natural resource exploitation. This includes developing frameworks to better understand the crime-conflict nexus and how and when natural resources may perpetuate or fuel conflict. It then looks at how sanctions can be used to disrupt the relationship.
